It's about new figuring myself out, saying goodbye to the past, and opening new chapters. Some list samples are: big plans, things i miss/don't miss about chicago, being a confident introvert, adventures in dating, all the things that have happened since list 14, traits i admire in other people, how i ended up in a relationship, the things i think are most important, places i've been and what i remember about them, and many more!
 ( preview pages )
Everydaypants #2 is $3. I drew all of these comics throughout the year 2011, for various things, and wanted to see them all in one place and in print! This includes a selection of pages from a 115 page, long-term comic series I've been working on about my first year in Philadelphia (to be printed at the end of 2012). Everydaypants #2 is filled with short comics about music, diy, nannying, and moving to a new city. This is 24 pages, black and white, and saddle stitched!

| Queerios: A Radical Queer Coloring and Activity Book |
[03 Jan 2012|11:04am] |
|
This will be the kind of activity book I never got (but always wanted) in my early teens. I'd like to put together a coloring and activity book highlighting people who were groundbreaking to you, personally. Harvey Milk and Oscar Wilde will always have a place carved out for them. This is about exploring people who did more than admit their same-sex attraction to the rest of the world. How about what Leslie Feinberg and Kate Borenstein did for trans visability and challenging gender norms? Or how James baldwin and Audre Lorde made queer people challenge racism within the GLBT community. And, just so we're clear? You don't have to identify as queer/trans to have a hero who does. Priority will be given to activities like dot-to-dots, paper dolls, and word searches, but coloring pages with biographies are great as well. The deadline for this is March 1st so I can have it put together by mid-to-late march, and out in the world by April. And of course, if you know someone who is interested, please feel free to pass this on to them, or repost widely. Please send pdfs of high resolution jpegs to piratesarah@gmail.com

| Call for Submissions - Once Upon A Distro |
[26 Oct 2011|07:49pm] |
I've been making zines since I was 15 - more than half of my life. At various points, zines have been a way for me to connect to communities that I didn't have access to, as well as being an important place for me to write about the stuff going on in my life. I've always written zines. I've always read zines. I've always wanted to do more. So, now I am. Once Upon a Distro is open for submissions starting now, and will be open for purchases and things starting in January of 2012. What I'm looking for right now are personal zines, particularly those by women, people of color, and GLBTQ folks. I'm not opposed to spoken word titles and crafts, but those will not be my priority. Please feel free to mail your zine for submission to: Sarah Rose 201 W. Evergreen Ave #1012, Philadelphia, PA 19118 or email with questions: piratesarah@gmail.com (www.onceuponadistro.com) (Sorry for all the cross posts!)

| Hot Tea, Cold Water #3: last letters of the alphabet issue! |
[26 Aug 2011|11:15am] |
It's not too late to jump on the alphabet train and be part of this project! The following letters are still available as of this writing:
F, I, N, U, W
This zine is very open-ended, in terms of content and media. For instance, if you took the letter F, you could write an essay about fat activism or feminism, write a story or comic that takes place in France, make a painting of a flea, or give a recipe for flour tortillas. I would stick to five pages or under, but longer works are definitely not ruled out.
To see the most up-to-date list of available letters and check out what topics people are picking so far, head over here!

| Call for submissions: Absent Cause #5 – Dangerous Gifts |
[08 Aug 2011|10:24am] |
Call for submissions: Absent Cause #5 – Dangerous Gifts
Absent Cause zine was established in 2008 as a venue for people from myriad cultures and selves, pushed to the outskirts and into the underground, to find each other, draw connections between their experiences, and gain strength for their struggles.
The term “Dangerous Gifts” is usually associated with the special contributions of people with mental illness / variance. But there are many kinds of dangerous gifts we experience and share: the person who chooses to wear a veil as an expression of culture or religion; gender or gender-less expression outside the male-female binary; being a fat person, a hairy grrrl, or having other physical characteristics outside mainstream acceptance; existing as a survivor in a social system that celebrates abuse and war; the choice to confront capitalism, racism, patriarchy and heteronormativity in a culture of submission; and so much more.
Absent Cause is seeking submissions on your experience of “Dangerous Gifts” for the forthcoming issue. Artwork, comix, photography, essays, poems, and SHORT fiction are welcome.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, September 30, 2011.
Explore the dark side with Absent Cause: Underground cultures and hidden histories; feminist, gender-variant and queer sexualities, chosen families and radical politics; vampirism, the gothic, horror and the macabre; surviving abuse, coping with mental illness/dangerous gifts, self-harm and suicide.

| Hot Tea, Cold Water #3: Open Call for Entries! |
[14 May 2011|04:19pm] |

Our theme this time: an (English) alphabet. There will be 26 contributors, with each making a comic, work of art, poem, short story, article, or how to that is in some way related to the letter. This could be about an issue you are passionate; something you just like to look at what the letter reminds you of, etc. It could be as loosely related as the first letter of the main character’s name, or as closely related as you want.
More info is in THIS POST on my journal, where you can see what letters are left to grab!

Shards of My Reality is my first ever perzine, and I thought I would kick it off with a Hello to the Zine Scene at large. :) It includes some of my artwork, comics, some information about me and who I am, ect. ect. including a SUPRISE ENDING (I say suprise, because something exciting happened while I was still working on this zine that was a suprise to me, and I end off the zine by mentioning what "it" was :D)
Future issues of Shards of My Reality will be less scattered and more serious subject matter, but I thought Id just introduce myself first, so here you go.
24 pages, half sized. 3.00$ or trade Available for sale on ArtFire

| Sale at Black Light Diner distro! |
[14 Mar 2011|07:58pm] |

I'm trying to downsize Black Light Diner distro in preparation for a move to a smaller apartment, so I am having a sale! For every four zines or other items ordered, get an additional zine (priced at $3.00 or less) free! Just put the name of the zine you want in the comments section of the checkout form. Don't worry about shipping. Sale runs until the end of March or until I remember to take this down.
I also noticed that Canadian readers were sometimes overpaying for postage, so there is now a cheaper Canada/Mexico shipping tier. Yay for finally figuring out Paypal shopping carts three years into running the distro. :)
Thanks for reading, Erica

| black light diner distro, february 2011 update |
[24 Feb 2011|10:26pm] |
Hey, just a friendly notice about the new zines available at Black Light Diner distro!!

ROOTS OF HOPE #3 (Portland, OR) Korinna's second Latin America travel zine starts off with a visually stunning cover. Seriously, my jaw dropped when I saw it: every issue comes with a different glossy photograph with hand-written titles. This fat, text-heavy zine chronicles Korinna's travels through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. A stop in Bogota finds her searching for a Colombian boyfriend, and ending up discussing plastic surgery with Australians (I didn't know this, but Cali, Colombia is the plastic surgery capital of the world). In Ecuador, she has a life-changing experience on a commune and befriends a Finnish girl who will become her traveling partner for much of the rest of the zine. Korinna also discusses the widespread use of cocaine in South America, and the ways in which imperialism fuel the drug culture there as much as here. Pictures of street art and cityscapes accompany and enhance the stories, giving them depth. An epic zine for anyone who is interested in Latin American politics, travel, or mature analyses of anarchism. $3.50, quarter sized, 82 pages.
( more under cut! )
Also, I will be closing the distro to online orders after this summer. I don't really like the day to day work of coding a website, dealing with Paypal shopping carts, or any of the various other fiddly things that go into running a zine distro with an online store. I will continue to run the distro as a table-only venture. So if you don't live in the eastern US and want some zines from me, make sure to order!
Thanks for reading, Erica

| INSOMNIA ZINE |
[18 Jan 2011|05:30pm] |

Just finished my new zine, Insomnia!
This has taken me a while to do, drawing comics is a lot of work. Im so excited to release it!
17 pages in all, this is a detailed guide to all the ways that I personally have tried to fight off insomnia. Its called a "warriors guide" because Iv kind of done a battle theme, breaking it into three sections: Weapons (outside substances that alter your state to make you sleepy), Battlefields (your sleep enviroment) and Stratagies (methods to become sleepy).
For sale on my ArtFire (email me for trades at mewkittens@hotmail.com)

| Crossed Genres - Calls for submissions & announcement |
[01 Dec 2010|09:52pm] |
Just a couple calls for submissions and an announcement to share.
#1 – Crossed Genres magazine is currently accepting submissions for the sci-fi and fantasy TRAGEDY issue.
#2 – The 'Science in My Fiction' blog is also seeking short story submissions. All stories must be inspired by actual science (with submissions, please include links to relevant articles).
#3 – Crossed Genres just released 'A Festival of Skeletons' by Rachel Astruc. It's a darkly fantastic comedy that still makes me chuckle, even though I've read it several times now. Sure, I'm the editor, but if you like sass and suspense, I think you'll enjoy reading 'A Festival of Skeletons'.
